Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition Brings Major Upgrades Over Z Fold6 – Here’s What You Need to Know

Samsung has just announced the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition in South Korea, bringing much-needed upgrades that position it ahead of its predecessor, the Z Fold6. The new device boasts larger screens, a slimmer profile, and an impressive 200MP main camera. This could very well be what the original Z Fold6 should have been.

One of the key highlights is its expanded display setup. The Z Fold Special Edition features a 6.5-inch LTPO AMOLED 2X cover screen, an improvement over the 6.3-inch display on the Z Fold6, with a more practical 21:9 aspect ratio. The main screen has also been upgraded to a generous 8-inch size, offering a more immersive experience with a 10:9 aspect ratio and a 120Hz refresh rate. The cover display is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2, although the anticipated switch to Ultra Flexible Glass (UFG) didn’t materialize.

In terms of design, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition is noticeably slimmer, measuring just 4.9 mm when unfolded and 10.6 mm when folded, making it much easier to handle. Weighing 236 grams, it’s 3 grams lighter than the Z Fold6, although the reduction in size has led to the removal of S Pen support, which might disappoint some users.

On the camera front, the Z Fold Special Edition makes a significant leap. The main shooter now offers a 200MP sensor with OIS, a major upgrade from the 50MP camera found on the Z Fold6. Additionally, the 12MP ultrawide lens now includes autofocus, a much-needed improvement. The 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom remains unchanged, and the dual selfie cameras—10MP on the cover and a 4MP under-display unit on the main screen—are also retained.

Powering the device is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy, paired with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. Connectivity gets a boost with the introduction of Wi-Fi 7, something yet to be seen on the Z Fold6. The software runs on One UI 6.1.1 based on Android 14, complete with Galaxy AI. Samsung promises 7 years of software support for this model.

The battery capacity remains the same at 4,400mAh with 25W wired charging and 15W wireless charging support.

Available in a sleek Black Shadow color, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition is priced at KRW 2,789,600 (roughly $2,028/€1,868). Unfortunately, this model is exclusive to South Korea, with rumors suggesting it may only expand to China under a different name, the Galaxy W25.
